API Gateways with AI: Kong and Tyk AI Features (2026)

Category: Databases & APIs

Introduction

In the microservices era, API Gateways (like Kong, Tyk, Apigee) managed REST traffic. In the AI era, they are evolving into AI Gateways. They no longer just route HTTP requests; they manage the lifecycle of LLM prompts.

This article explores how traditional gateway giants Kong and Tyk have pivoted to become critical infrastructure for AI applications.

Why do you need an AI Gateway?

If your developers are calling OpenAI/Anthropic directly from their apps, you have a problem:

  1. No Visibility: Who is spending the most tokens?
  2. No Control: How do you stop a rogue loop from burning $10,000?
  3. Vendor Lock-in: Hardcoded URLs make it hard to switch from GPT-4 to Claude 3.

An AI Gateway sits between your apps and the LLM providers.

Kong AI Gateway

Kong, the open-source king, introduced the "AI Proxy" plugin.

Key Features

  1. Multi-LLM Routing: You send a standardized request to Kong. Kong decides whether to route it to OpenAI, Azure, or a local Llama 3 model based on headers or load.
  2. Prompt Guard: Kong scans the content of the prompt before sending it.
    • Rule: "Block any prompt containing PII (Social Security Numbers)."
    • Rule: "Block jailbreak attempts."
  3. Semantic Caching: If User A asks "Who is the CEO of Apple?" and User B asks "Apple CEO name", Kong sees they are semantically identical and serves the cached response, saving money and time.

Configuration Example (Declarative Config)

plugins:
  - name: ai-proxy
    config:
      route_type: "llm/v1/chat"
      auth:
        header_name: "Authorization"
        header_value: "Bearer {VAULT://openai-key}"
      model:
        provider: openai
        name: gpt-4
        options:
          temperature: 0.7

Tyk AI Gateway

Tyk focuses heavily on Governance and Monetization.

Key Features

  1. Token Rate Limiting: Traditional gateways limit "Requests per Minute." Tyk limits "Tokens per Minute." This is crucial because one request could be 10 tokens or 10,000 tokens.
  2. Monetization: Tyk allows you to resell LLM access to your internal teams or external customers, tracking usage per token.
  3. Virtual Endpoint: You define a /chat endpoint on Tyk. Tyk handles the complex retry logic, fallback (if OpenAI is down, try Anthropic), and logging.

Comparison: Kong vs Tyk vs Dedicated AI Gateways

We previously discussed dedicated AI Gateways like Portkey in Article 11. How do traditional gateways compare?

FeatureKong / TykDedicated (Portkey / Helicone)
ArchitectureSidecar / Proxy (Heavy)Lightweight SDK / Proxy
IntegrationFits into existing API ManagementRequires new setup
FeaturesRobust Auth, Traffic ControlSpecialized Prompt Management
Best ForEnterprises with existing GatewaysStartups / AI-First Teams

Conclusion

If you are an enterprise already running Kong or Tyk, you don't need a new tool. Enable their AI plugins. You gain immediate visibility and control over your AI traffic.

If you are starting from scratch, dedicated AI Gateways might offer a faster developer experience, but Kong and Tyk offer the stability of battle-tested infrastructure.
